Train and Eat as One: How Mas Body Gym and Macro Based Diet Work Together
Every coach will tell you that results are made in the kitchen. Most of them then leave you to sort the kitchen out yourself. I built the kitchen next door instead. Mas Body Gym and Macro Based Diet sit side by side on Metcalfe Road in Middlesbrough for one reason: training and eating are two halves of the same job, and they are easier when they live in the same place.
How it started
I opened Mas Body Gym first. Members trained hard, saw results for a month, then stalled, and when I asked what they were eating the answer was usually a shrug or a sandwich from a garage. In 2018 we started cooking calorie-counted meals for members. It grew into Macro Based Diet, which now cooks fresh meal prep in the kitchen at 33 Metcalfe Road and delivers across Teesside and mainland UK. It was named Meal Prep Company of the Year 2024 and has sold over a million pounds of meals through its website since 2022. But it is still the gym's kitchen at heart.
What the meals are
Every Macro Based Diet meal is labelled with its calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat. You choose a portion size to match your goal: around 300 calories a meal for weight loss, 370 for maintenance and 470 for weight gain, and you pick your own dishes, protein, carbohydrate and vegetables. Meals cost from £4.85 and are cooked fresh, never frozen, and keep for three days in the fridge or can be frozen on the day they arrive.
How members use it
There is no one right way. Some members order a full week of meals delivered to their door every Sunday evening. Some collect from the kitchen on the way out of the gym. Some call in for one meal to eat after training. HYROX members tend to order the higher-carb meals in the week before a race. People cutting for a holiday or a competition order the weight-loss portions and let the label do the counting. The point is that the food is sorted, so the only decision left is whether you turn up to train.
The members' discount
Every Mas Body Gym member gets 15% off Macro Based Diet meal prep. The code is for members only, so ask Ashleigh or Mike at the desk and it goes on your account. On a typical weekly order it pays for a good chunk of the gym membership.
Eating for your goal, in one paragraph each
Fat loss
Protein high, a small calorie deficit, and consistency over perfection. Three hundred-calorie meals with a protein-rich breakfast get most people there without hunger. Train three or four times a week and walk on the other days.
Building muscle
Protein around two grams per kilogram of bodyweight, enough carbohydrate to train hard, and a small surplus. The 470-calorie weight-gain portions exist for exactly this. Train each muscle twice a week and add weight to the bar.
HYROX and conditioning
Carbohydrate is your fuel. Low-carb diets and HYROX training do not mix. Eat carbs around every session, keep protein up for recovery, and do not diet hard in the fortnight before a race.
Why one site matters
Because it removes the excuse. Nobody has ever failed to reach a goal in our gym because the training was wrong. They fail because life gets in the way of the food. With the kitchen next door, the food is handled, the coaching is on the floor, and the only thing left is to show up. That is what More Than Just a Gym means.
